Narrow Gauge Railways of France

Le Petit Train Jaune

The 'Little Yellow Train' (Le Petit Train Jaune) was built in the first decade of the 20th century to serve the scattered community of the Cerdagne, a high plateau in the Pyrenees. To deal with the steep gradients without using a rack, the line was one of the first built with electric multiple units in mind, and runs on the third rail electric system.

At La Tour de Carol you get the rare sight of three railway gauges in one station. On the far left is a standard gauge platform, centre left the end of the broad gauge line from Barcelona, then another standard gauge platform and finally on the right the narrow gauge platforms of Le Petit Train Jaune.
Travelling in the open carriage on a fine day in early June.
The most amazing feat of engineering on the line is this suspension bridge high above a river gorge. The line is so twisty with so many tunnels that the approach to the bridge is quite unexpected.
